Florida's hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. For organizations — businesses, schools, nonprofits, and community groups — preparation must begin well before the first named storm forms in the Atlantic.
72 Hours Before a Storm
Activate your emergency response team. Review your evacuation routes and shelter-in-place procedures. Back up all critical data to off-site or cloud storage. Secure outdoor equipment and signage. Notify staff of protocols and reporting procedures.
48 Hours Before
Confirm all staff have received emergency contact information. Ensure emergency supplies are stocked (water, first aid, flashlights, batteries). Coordinate with vendors and suppliers on contingency plans. Document the current state of your facility with photos and video.
After the Storm
Do not re-enter the facility until it has been cleared as safe. Document all damage immediately for insurance purposes. Activate your business continuity plan. Communicate with staff, customers, and stakeholders about your recovery timeline.
Year-Round Preparedness
The organizations that recover fastest are those that treat preparedness as an ongoing practice, not a seasonal checklist. Annual training, updated contact lists, and regular plan reviews make all the difference.
