If you are new to firearms, the most important thing you can do is build safe habits from day one. As a certified NRA instructor with over 40 years of experience, I have seen how proper safety education prevents accidents and builds confidence. Here are the 10 essential safety tips every new gun owner must know.

Tip 1: Treat every firearm as if it is loaded. This is the golden rule of gun safety. Even if you just checked it, even if someone told you it is unloaded, treat it as loaded. This mindset prevents complacency and keeps you vigilant at all times.

Tip 2: Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. A safe direction means if the gun were to fire, it would not cause injury or damage. At home, point toward the floor or an exterior wall. At the range, always keep the muzzle pointed downrange. Never let the muzzle sweep across any person, including yourself.

Tip 3: Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Your trigger finger should rest along the frame of the firearm, outside the trigger guard, until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to fire. This single habit prevents the majority of negligent discharges.

Tip 4: Know your target and what is beyond it. Before you fire, identify your target with certainty and be aware of what lies behind it. Bullets can pass through targets, walls, and other materials. In a defensive situation, consider who else might be in the line of fire.

Tip 5: Store firearms securely and separately from ammunition. Invest in a quality gun safe or lockbox. If you have children or visitors in your home, secure storage is not optional. Store ammunition in a separate locked container. Biometric safes offer quick access while maintaining security.

Tip 6: Learn how your firearm operates before firing it. Read the owner's manual. Understand how to load, unload, engage the safety, and field strip your firearm. Never attempt to fire a gun you do not fully understand. Take a professional training course to learn proper operation.

Tip 7: Use the correct ammunition for your firearm. The caliber or gauge is stamped on the barrel or slide. Using incorrect ammunition can cause catastrophic failure and serious injury. Always inspect ammunition before loading and never mix different types.

Tip 8: Wear eye and ear protection every time you shoot. Gunfire produces sound levels that cause permanent hearing damage. Flying brass, powder residue, and debris can injure your eyes. Quality shooting glasses and earmuffs or plugs are mandatory, not optional.

Tip 9: Never use alcohol or drugs before or during shooting. Impaired judgment and slowed reaction time are incompatible with firearm safety. If you are taking prescription medications that affect alertness, consult your doctor before handling firearms.

Tip 10: Get professional training. Reading articles and watching videos are helpful, but nothing replaces hands-on instruction from a certified instructor.
