Home Defense Planning: Beyond the Firearm

Effective home defense is about much more than owning a firearm. It requires a comprehensive, layered approach that starts at your property line and extends through every room of your home. As a former law enforcement officer, I have responded to hundreds of home intrusions, and the best outcomes always involved preparation.

Layer one is deterrence. Well-lit exteriors, visible security cameras, alarm system signs, and trimmed landscaping that eliminates hiding spots all discourage potential intruders. Most burglars are opportunistic — they choose the easiest target. Make your home a hard target.

Layer two is detection. A quality alarm system with door and window sensors, motion detectors, and a monitored service provides early warning. Smart doorbells and cameras let you see who is at your door from anywhere. The earlier you detect a threat, the more time you have to respond.

Layer three is your response plan. Every family member should know what to do if an intruder enters the home. Designate a safe room — ideally an interior room with a solid door and a lock — where the family gathers while one person calls 911. Your firearm should be accessible from this location.

Finally, understand the legal framework. Florida Castle Doctrine provides strong protections for homeowners, but you must still act reasonably. Never pursue a fleeing intruder, never fire warning shots, and always call 911 immediately after any defensive encounter. Our home defense course in Tallahassee covers all of these strategies in detail.
