Your First Range Visit: What to Expect, Bring, and Do

Your first visit to a shooting range is a milestone in your firearms journey, and it is completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. The good news is that shooting ranges are designed to be safe, controlled environments, and the staff and fellow shooters are almost always welcoming to newcomers. Here is exactly what to expect so you can walk in with confidence.

What to bring: Eye protection (impact-rated shooting glasses, not regular sunglasses), ear protection (over-ear muffs are best for beginners — electronic muffs that amplify conversation while blocking gunfire are ideal), your firearm in a proper case if you own one, ammunition appropriate for your firearm, and a valid photo ID. Most ranges also require you to sign a liability waiver. If you do not own a firearm, many ranges offer rentals — call ahead to confirm availability and pricing.

What to wear: Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Avoid low-cut tops, V-neck shirts, and open collars — hot brass ejected from semi-automatic firearms can land on exposed skin and cause burns. A baseball cap with a brim helps deflect brass away from your face. Wear comfortable clothing that allows a full range of arm motion. Leave jewelry that could snag on equipment at home.

When you arrive, check in at the front desk and let them know it is your first visit. The staff will walk you through their specific range rules, show you the facility layout, and answer any questions. Do not be embarrassed to ask — range staff deal with new shooters every day and appreciate those who take the time to learn. If the range offers a brief orientation or introductory lesson, take it.

On the firing line, take your time. There is no rush and no competition. Focus on the fundamentals: proper grip, sight alignment, trigger control, and above all, the three NRA safety rules. Start with your target close — 5 to 7 yards is plenty for a first session. Accuracy at close range builds confidence and good habits. As you become comfortable, you can move the target back gradually.

After your session, unload your firearm, lock the action open, and case it at the bench. Clean up your lane by collecting spent brass if the range allows, removing your target, and disposing of any trash. Wash your hands and face thoroughly before eating or drinking to remove lead residue. Reflect on what you learned, and do not hesitate to book a lesson with a certified instructor for your next visit.
