First-Time Gun Buyer's Guide: What to Know Before Your Purchase

Purchasing your first firearm is a significant decision that deserves careful thought and research. As an instructor who works with many first-time gun owners in Tallahassee, I always recommend getting training before making a purchase so you can make an informed choice.

Start by identifying your primary purpose. Home defense, concealed carry, and recreational shooting each call for different types of firearms. A full-size pistol may be ideal for home defense but impractical for concealed carry. A compact revolver is simple to operate but holds fewer rounds. Understanding your needs narrows your options significantly.

In Florida, you must be 21 years old to purchase a handgun from a licensed dealer. All purchases from federally licensed dealers require a background check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. There is a mandatory three-day waiting period for handgun purchases unless you hold a valid Florida CCW permit.

Before buying, handle as many different firearms as possible. Visit local gun stores in Tallahassee and ask to hold different models. Pay attention to how the grip feels in your hand, whether you can comfortably reach the trigger and controls, and the overall weight. Many ranges offer rental firearms so you can try before you buy.

Budget for more than just the firearm itself. You will need a quality holster if carrying, a secure storage solution, ammunition for practice, eye and ear protection, and cleaning supplies. Most importantly, budget for professional training. A firearm without proper training is a liability, not an asset.
