One of the greatest advantages of a Florida Concealed Carry Weapon permit is its wide reciprocity. As of 2025, over 35 states recognize the Florida CCW permit, making it one of the most versatile concealed carry licenses in the nation.
However, reciprocity does not mean uniform laws. Each state that honors your Florida permit has its own rules about where you can carry, whether you must inform law enforcement during a traffic stop, and what types of firearms and ammunition are permitted. It is your responsibility to know the laws of every state you enter.
Some states that border Florida, like Georgia and Alabama, have relatively permissive carry laws. Others, like certain northeastern states, do not recognize any out-of-state permits. Before any trip, research the specific laws of every state on your route — including states you are just passing through.
When transporting firearms across state lines, the federal Firearm Owners Protection Act provides some protection for travelers passing through restrictive states, provided the firearm is unloaded and locked away from ammunition. However, this protection has limitations and should not be relied upon as a blanket defense.
We cover reciprocity in detail during our CCW course in Tallahassee and provide students with current reciprocity maps and resources. Laws change frequently, so we recommend checking the USCCA or NRA reciprocity tools before every trip to ensure your information is current.
