Four Fundamental Safety Rules

These cardinal rules form the foundation of all firearms safety training and must be followed at all times.

1

Treat Every Firearm as Loaded

Always assume every firearm is loaded, even if you believe it to be unloaded. This mindset prevents complacency and ensures consistent safe handling practices.

2

Never Point at Anything You Don't Intend to Destroy

Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times. Be conscious of where your firearm is pointing during handling, loading, and unloading.

3

Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger

Keep your finger outside the trigger guard and along the frame until you are on target and have made the decision to fire. This prevents accidental discharges.

4

Be Sure of Your Target and Beyond

Identify your target and what is behind it before firing. Bullets can penetrate targets and continue traveling, so know what lies beyond your intended target.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers about CCW permits, Florida license requirements, NRA-sponsored courses, and more.

CCW Permits & License Requirements

To obtain a Florida CCW permit, you must be at least 21 years old (or 18 for military members), be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien, have no felony convictions, have no domestic violence misdemeanor convictions, not be a substance abuser, not have been committed to a mental institution, and complete an approved firearms safety training course. Our CCW course satisfies the training requirement, and we assist with the full application process through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

After completing our CCW course and submitting your application to the Florida Department of Agriculture, processing typically takes 60-90 days. We provide all necessary documentation including your state-approved training certificate, and walk you through the application, fingerprinting, and photo requirements to avoid delays.

Yes, Florida has reciprocity agreements with 37+ states that honor the Florida CCW permit. This includes most southeastern states, Texas, and many others. However, reciprocity laws change frequently. During our CCW course, we provide a current list of reciprocal states and discuss the specific regulations you must follow when carrying in each state.

As of July 1, 2023, Florida allows permitless concealed carry for eligible individuals 21 and older. However, obtaining a CCW permit still offers significant advantages: reciprocity with other states, exemption from the 3-day waiting period on firearm purchases, ability to carry in more locations, and proof of training. We strongly recommend completing our CCW course regardless of Constitutional Carry laws.

It depends on the nature of the offense. Felony convictions generally disqualify you permanently. Certain misdemeanors, especially domestic violence-related charges, also disqualify applicants. Some older misdemeanors may not prevent you from obtaining a permit. We recommend consulting with a legal professional about your specific situation before enrolling in the CCW course.

Even with a valid Florida CCW permit, you cannot carry in: any place of nuisance, police/sheriff/highway patrol stations, courthouses, polling places, government meetings, school events, bars (establishments deriving more than 50% of revenue from alcohol), airports (past security), and federal buildings. Our course covers all restricted locations in detail.

NRA-Sponsored Advanced Courses

We offer several NRA-certified courses including: NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course, NRA Personal Protection in the Home, NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home, and NRA Range Safety Officer certification. Our instructors are NRA-certified and follow the official NRA curriculum to ensure you receive nationally recognized training and certification.

The NRA Personal Protection in the Home course teaches the knowledge, skills, and attitude needed to defend yourself and your family in your home. It covers home security planning, threat assessment, legal considerations for home defense, defensive shooting fundamentals, and scenario-based training. This is an intermediate-level course that requires prior basic firearms experience. Duration is approximately 8 hours.

This advanced NRA course covers concealed carry strategies, situational awareness, threat avoidance and de-escalation, legal use of force outside the home, drawing from concealment, and defensive shooting in various scenarios. Prerequisites include completion of the NRA Basic Pistol course or equivalent experience. This is a 16-hour course typically conducted over two days.

We offer the NRA Range Safety Officer certification course, which is a one-day program covering range safety procedures, range rules and regulations, emergency procedures, and how to safely supervise shooting activities. You must be at least 21 years old and possess a basic knowledge of firearms. Upon completion, you receive an NRA RSO certification valid for 3 years.

NRA training certifications do not expire for students. However, NRA instructor and Range Safety Officer certifications must be renewed every 3 years. We offer renewal courses and can help you maintain your active certification status. Contact us to schedule your renewal training.

NRA Gun Safety Rules

At the NRA, firearm education and safety is paramount—that’s why we offer a variety of programs and services to promote the safe handling, use and storage of firearms. Whether you’re a parent in search of information about firearm safety in the home, a first-time gun owner, or an old pro looking to brush up on your firearm handling skills, the NRA is here to keep you and your family safe. Explore NRA’s fundamental rules of gun safety, as well as information how to safely store a gun and good cleaning practices.

The fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling are:

Blue Icon of a Firearm Pointed in a Safe Direction

ALWAYS Keep The Gun Pointed In A Safe Direction

This is the primary rule of gun safety. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

Blue Icon of Finger Off The Trigger

ALWAYS Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Ready To Shoot

When holding a gun, rest your finger alongside the frame and outside the trigger guard. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

Blue Icon of an Unloaded Shotgun

ALWAYS Keep The Gun Unloaded Until Ready To Use

If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

When using or storing a gun, always follow these additional NRA rules:

Know your target and what is beyond.

Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second.

Know how to use the gun safely.

Before handling a gun, learn how it operates. Know its basic parts, how to safely open and close the action and remove any ammunition from the gun or magazine. Remember, a gun's mechanical safety device is never foolproof. Nothing can ever replace safe gun handling.

Be sure the gun is safe to operate.

Just like other tools, guns need regular maintenance to remain operable. Regular cleaning and proper storage are a part of the gun's general upkeep. If there is any question concerning a gun's ability to function, a knowledgeable gunsmith should look at it.

Use only the correct ammunition for your gun.

Only BBs, pellets, cartridges or shells designed for a particular gun can be fired safely in that gun. Most guns have the ammunition type stamped on the barrel. Ammunition can be identified by information printed on the box and sometimes stamped on the cartridge. Do not shoot the gun unless you know you have the proper ammunition.

Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate.

Guns are loud and the noise can cause hearing damage. They can also emit debris and hot gasses that could cause eye injury. For these reasons, shooting glasses and hearing protection should be worn by shooters and spectators.

Never use alcohol, over-the-counter drugs or prescription drugs before or while shooting.

Alcohol, as well as any other substance likely to impair normal mental or physical bodily functions, must not be used before or while handling or shooting guns.

Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons.

Many factors must be considered when deciding where and how to store guns. A person's particular situation will be a major part of the consideration. Dozens of gun storage devices, as well as locking devices that attach directly to the gun, are available. However, mechanical locking devices, like the mechanical safeties built into guns, can fail and should not be used as a substitute for safe gun handling and the observance of all gun-safety rules.

Additional Safety Precautions

Be aware that certain types of guns and many shooting activities require additional safety precautions.

Cleaning

Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely. Taking proper care of it will also maintain its value and extend its life. Your gun should be cleaned every time that it is used.

A gun brought out of prolonged storage should also be cleaned before shooting. Accumulated moisture and dirt, or solidified grease and oil, can prevent the gun from operating properly.

Before cleaning your gun, make absolutely sure that it is unloaded. The gun's action should be open during the cleaning process. Also, be sure that no ammunition is present in the cleaning area.
