Parallel parking consistently ranks as the most stressful part of the Florida driving test. But with the right technique and practice, it becomes second nature. Here is the step-by-step method our instructors teach at J. Jacobs Driving School.
Step one: Pull up alongside the car in front of the empty space, aligning your rear bumper with theirs. Keep about two feet of space between your car and theirs. This starting position is critical for success.
Step two: Put your car in reverse and turn your steering wheel all the way to the right. Slowly back up while checking your mirrors and looking over your right shoulder. When you can see the entire front of the car behind you in your left mirror, stop.
Step three: Straighten your wheels and continue backing up slowly until your right front bumper is even with the rear bumper of the car in front. Then turn your wheel all the way to the left and continue backing until you are parallel with the curb.
Step four: Straighten your wheels and adjust your position. You should be within 12 inches of the curb and centered in the space. Practice this method repeatedly in an empty parking lot before attempting it on the street or during your road test.
